Karen Mitchell has been working as an artist and jewelry designer for over twenty years. After several years designing and making jewelry in Aspen, she accepted an invitation to apprentice for one of the top, avant-garde jewelry designers in Milan, Italy, subsequently living and working there for three years. She then moved to New York where she designed jewelry for many well-known national and international jewelry houses, and for private commission. Ms. Mitchell is currently designing jewelry in Aspen.
History, ancient and modern culture, ceremonial iconography and metamorphosis inspire Ms. Mitchells collection of high-karat gold jewelry. Creating language through texture, pattern and color is important in the design of each piece. Exploration of nature and contrast, (combining crude and refined, discovering modernity through antiquity), is a fundamental motivation for Ms. Mitchells work.
Ms. Mitchells jewelry is exhibited in many of the finest galleries and jewelry stores throughout the country and in her atelier in Aspen. Her clients include artists, art collectors, high-profile business entrepreneurs, diplomats, performers and socialites from around the globe.
A complete artist, Karen combines design with intense activity as goldsmith/craftswoman. She [has divided] her time between Colorado where she was born and completed her university education, New York, her adopted city and Milan, where she specialized in design and manufacture. Karen has accumulated a vast spread of experience, ranging from the knowledge of the ancient goldsmiths art to that of precious stones and European design. During her travels in Europe and America she has attracted the attention of an international clientele, which has followed the development of her art since 1979, commissioning precious single pieces from her.
